When your body loses full articulation [movement ] at one joint, it compensates with movement at other joints instead.
For many people this is especially bad for the knees and usually the problem starter is the ankle.
By wearing certain shoes , boots etc, and decreasing your play and varying movements through the day, you are decreasing your movement of the highly movable ankle.
The joint above is the knee and is a hinge joint not meant to take all it the pivoting the ankle and hip are meant to.
By decreasing the movement in the ankle, the knee now is forced to try and compensate with movements that it isn’t meant to field.
Which in turn can wear out the cartilage and ligaments prematurely which give you knee pain and or the need for surgery.
